Ghani to Iran: Answer queries from victims’ families

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday stressed transparency in investigating the crash of a Ukrainian plane and asked the government of Iran to consider demands of the victims’ families.

President Ghani held a telephonic conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the Ukrainian plane crash in Tehran, his office said in a statement.

The statement said Trudeau extended his condolences to the victims’ families and called the crash a shocking incident that resulted in the loss of precious lives and sparked concerns for their people.

“We all should focus on future steps. One positive step was that Iran accepted responsibility for the incident and more steps are needed to be taken,” Trudeau said.

The premier renewed Canada’s commitment to peace, stability and reduction in violence in Afghanistan.

Ghani also extended his condolences to Canadian victims’ families and thanked the prime minister for his gesture of sympathy.

“We are also affected by the incident and want Iran to take serious measures because our people demand explanation,” the president remarked.

Ghani emphasised on transparency in the investigating process and supported the stance of working teams. He said Iran should answer questions from the victims’ families.

“We want de-escalation in the region and the role of Canada is vital in Afghanistan’s peace and stability,” the president said.

The Ukrainian airliner burst into flames shortly after take-off from Tehran last week, killing all 176 people aboard.

Iran has acknowledged that its military “unintentionally” shot down the plane. At least 13 Afghan nationals were among the victims.
