KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 684 new positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported from different parts of the country in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Public Health said on Wednesday.

Dr. Ahmad Jawad Usmani, acting minister of Public health, told a press conference here, that a total of 1,128 individuals underwent tests during the period, with 684 testing positive for Covid-19 and taking the country tally to 22, 143,

Kabul recorded 393 new cases and Herat province 94 infections during the past 24 hours, Usmani said.

Ninety-five new cases were detected in Nangarhar, 25 in Nimroz, 18 in Kunar, 13 in Kandahar, 12 in Farah.

Eight cases were detected in Kunduz, seven in Uruzgan, six in Baghis, four each in Badakhshanin and Zabul and three in Parwan.

At least 21 people lost their lives to COVID-19, and 324 others recovered in the past 24 hours. As many as 405 Afghans have died from the pandemic while 2,975 recovered so far.

In the wake of soaring cases, the government extended closure of government and private schools and Universities for another three months.

Also on Tuesday, Kabul Governor Mohammad Yaqoob Haidari ordered closure of shops and hotels in Kabul that violate the Ministry of Public Health advice on Covid-19 spread.

Haidari issued the orders during a visit to the city late Monday night. The governor said Majid Mal, Park Mal, hotels and shops would be closed as they did not practice to health guidelines in the ongoing quarantine period.
