KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): More than 20,000 families have been displaced as a result of clashes between security forces and Taliban militants in some districts of southern Kandahar province, local officials said on Thursday.
Dost Mohammad Nayab, head of the Refugee and Repatriation Department, during an interview told Pajhwok Afghan News that in the last four months over 20,000 families were displaced due to clashes in Arghandab, Zherai, Pajwai and Maiwand districts.
Nayab said for a third time 2,500 people left their homes in Arghandab district during the past 10 days as a result of heavy clashes.
He said the Disaster Management Authority had assisted families displaced from districts and some displaced families who sought refuge in urban areas were supported by various welfare organizations.
He said in Kandahar City, a survey of 5,500 displaced families had been completed. Aid and cash support has been provided to over 3,000 families so far and the remaining families are waiting for the aid.
Nayab said WFP, Save the Children, UNICEF, DACAAR and other organizations are involved in providing food and other necessary assistance to the displaced families.
He said nine working groups had been tasked to survey displaced families in the city and one day in a week the displaced families received assistance.
Faiz Mohammad, a resident of Arghandab district, who is migrated to Srai Kala refugee camp in Kandahar City, said thousands of families had been forced to migrate from their homes at a time when their crops were ready for harvest.
He thanked the government and other agencies for providing them with support and added that thousands of more families had been waiting for aid.
Akhtar Mohammad, another displaced person from Arghandab district, said the Taliban waged attacks in the district when pomegranate crop was ready for harvest, something local residents waited for the entire year.
Arghandab is known for producing quality pomegranates.
