HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Iran has released more than 300 Afghan prisoners, Local officials in western Herat province said on Thursday.
Jilani Farhad, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the prisoners were handed over to Herat officials at Islam Qala port on Wednesday.
He said the inmates included four women and 302 men, who had spent years in Iranian jails over a variety of offenses.
Farhad explained the individuals had been released as a result of an agreement signed between the two countries years ago.
The Iranian consulate in Herat declined commenting on the release of the Afghan citizens.
Earlier as well the neighbours had exchanged prisoners.
