MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): An increasing number of families are selling their household items due to poverty and for migration to other countries in northern Balkh province.

These families say there are no business activities, banks are closed and they are left with no other option but to sell house appliances to earn livelihood.

A special street where used items are sold is jam-packed with both buyers and sellers and no one had time to talk to Pajhwok reporter about the situation.

Noor Mohammad, a businessperson, told Pajhwok Afghan News “they go to people’s homes to purchase all their equipment”.

“Every transaction is different, sometimes we buy all households on 20,000 afs and sell them for more than 50,000 afs.”

He said not all families sell their belongings for their immigration to foreign nations but some people sell them due to economic problems.

“There is no business, banks are closed and most people don’t have cash therefore they had to sell their household items,” he said.

Khair Mohammad, a resident of Mazar-i-Sharif, said he brought washing machine and some other used items to sell them in the bazaar. He said he had been without work for the past three week and had earned no money.

“I am a daily wager, I used to earn 300 afs daily, but from the past 20 days I did not find work.”

Jamaluddin, another resident of Mazar-i-Sharif, said he sold all his household items as they had decided to migrate to Pakistan or Iran and spent their life there.

“We have no option but to go there, salaries are stopped, there is no work so we have no option but to go abroad so we could at least earn bread.”

Referring to the economic problems of the people, the Taliban deputy spokesperson AhmadullahWaseeq said the Taliban will soon announce their cabinet and daily activities would resume.
