LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Construction work on a canal costing more than six million afghanis has begun in Lashkargah, the capital of southern Helmand province, officials said on Sunday.
At the launch of the project, Helmand Mayor Mullah Ansari told the media that construction work on the 700-meter-long canal had begun in the first and second districts of Lashkargah.
He said 6.4 million afghanis would be spent on the canal, which would be funded by the municipality.
Maulvi Ansari called on the people to cooperate with the government in paying taxes so that similar projects could be implemented.
Abdul Khaliq Aka, a resident of Lashkargah, told Pajhwok Afghan News the canal would help alleviate the problems of the people.
"There is a lot of water accumulation in these areas during winter season, which is a big problem for the people, but with the construction of this canal, this problem will be solved," he said.
Construction of the canal is launched in Lashkargah, where many of the city's bridges, culverts, roads, hospitals, schools and residential houses have been destroyed during previous wars.
