GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): The dusty, bumpy and potholes-ridden road between Nawa district and Ghazni city, the capital of southern Ghazni province, not only poses threat to commuters but also takes a toll on vehicles in terms of damage, residents say.
Nawa district is 170 kilometers south-west of Ghazni City. The district has more than 300 villages where thousands of families live.
A tribal elder of the district, Mohibullah Khpalwak, told Pajhwok the road from Nawa district to the center of Ghazni had been in bad condition for years.
He said children, women and elderly people daily travelled on the road to reach their destinations, but the run-down condition of the road had prolonged their journey for several hours.
The elder said vehicles plying the road often developed technical faults and got stuck in mud during rainy days.
He said Nawa residents had complained to the previous government and also to the incumbent government about the road’s bad condition and demanded its construction, but no one listened to them.
A driver on the route, Akhtar Muhammad, told Pajhwok the road’s condition worsens in winter and it becomes very challenging for drivers to transport goods and patients.
“Vehicles often develop technical faults or get stuck in mud and they remain there for days as there is no facility along the road.”
These residents urged the government to construct the road in order they could get rid of the situation.
Local officials in Ghanzi confirmed the issue and said they had shared with the relevant ministry which had assured to construct the road.
Public Works Director Maulvi Muhibullah Abbas told Pajhwok he had shared the road issue of Nawa district residents with the relevant ministry.
However, he said the road’ s construction needed budget and the Ministry of Public Works currently faced a shortage of fund.
“Nawa residents have lodged complaints with us, which we have sent to the Ministry of Public Works. Currently, we have the plan to gravel the road and construct some culverts, on which work will be launched soon.”
Roads of many other districts of the province are also in a dilapidated condition and their residents are asking for their construction.
