KABUL (Pajhwok): A slaughterhouse built on modern standards by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) at a cost of six million US dollars was inaugurated in Reshkhor area of Kabul city on Thursday.
Acting Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Minister Maulvi Ataullah Omari said at the opening ceremony of the slaughterhouse that animals would be slaughtered in a standard manner and hygienic and healthy meat would be provided to the people.
He said most animals in the country were slaughtered in a non-standard way and as a result many diseases were transmitted to humans.
Kabul governor Maulvi Muhammad Khalid Qasim on the occasion said that the slaughterhouse had been set up on modern standards.
He added the facility besides preventing the transmission of diseases from animals to humans would also provide employment opportunities.
Nusratullah Yusufzai, the head of the abattoir, told Pajhwok that the Asian Development Bank built the facility five years ago, but it could not be opened due to some problems.
He said the abattoir had the capacity to slaughter 3,500 big and 800 small animals in 24 hours against 1450 afghanis and 350 afghanis respectively.
