SAR-I-PUL (Pajhwok): A campaign has been launched to vaccinate 90,000 cows against the Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in northern Sar-i-Pul province.

Qari Mohammad Ishaq Qureshi, an official of Agriculture and Livestock Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) had provided 90,000 LSD vaccine doses.

He added during the two-month campaign, the vaccine would be administered to 90,000 cows in order to halt the spread of LSD.

“LSD has spread among cows in neighboring provinces of Sar-i-Pul, but fortunately, this disease is yet to be detected in cows in this province, and this vaccine would be given to cows before its outbreak,” he added.

According to the official,  lumpy skin disease is a viral disease that affects cattle and is transmitted by blood-feeding insects, such as certain species of flies.

The disease clinical signs include raised skin nodules around the head, neck, genitals and limbs, swelling of limbs, brisket and genitals and reluctance to move and eat.

Meanwhile, cattle farmers in Sar-i-Pul are happy with the launch of the vaccination campaign.

Salahuddin, owner of cows, said: “We are illiterate. If the Animal Health Directorate does not provide information to us about prevention of diseases in animals and does not treat animals, farmers will face many problems”
