KABUL (Pajhwok): A standard cold storage facility costing $1.5 million is being constructed in western Herat province and is expected to be completed and become operational within the next few days.
In a statement, the governor’s office said construction of the facility was about 97 percent complete. It is being built on a plot covering 4,000 square metres.
The facility has a storage capacity of about 3,000 tonnes of fruit, vegetables, meat, pharmaceutical products and other food items. It comprises five storage rooms, the statement said.
According to the statement, the facility has been constructed in accordance with required standards to preserve the quality of food products.
The governor’s office said establishing standard cold storage facilities could help reduce agricultural product waste and give farmers opportunities to store their produce throughout the year.
