6 people arrested over illegal drilling in Jawzjan

SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): Six people have been arrested in connection with illegal drilling at a historic site in northern Jawzjan province, an official said on Monday.

Information and Cultural Affairs Director Mawlavi Saifuddin Motasim said the arrest was made on Sunday in the Bala Mardyan village of Faizabad district.

“These six people are arrested in connection with illegal and unauthorized digging in one of the historic site, they confessed recovering some silver coins during drilling at the site,” he said.

According to Mawlavi Motasim the area where drilling was taken place had been earlier registered in the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, but since now it will be registered as a historic place.

He said: “We want to tell the people of Jawzjan to refrain from unauthorized and illegal drilling in historic place otherwise they will be dealt according to the law.”

He said the local government has plan for the protection and maintenance of historic sites.
