MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A woman has hired 300 poor women in her carpet and wool weaving workshop in Mazar-i-Sharif city of northern Balkh province.
The workshop owner, Alia Makhdoom, told Pajhwok Afghan News that seven months ago, she established the workshop for weaving carpets and wool to provide employment opportunities to poor women.
She said 300 women worked in her workshop and most of them were widows, poor and displaced women.
Meanwhile, workers at the workshop say they are also happy to have been provided with a working environment.
Tajgul, a carpet weaver in the factory, expressed her happiness and said before joining the workshop she was unemployed at home and faced many problems.
According to Tajgul, now she supports her family and children.
Rabia Qabadi, another employee, said she and her other family members had been struggling with many problems due to unemployment, but now she was learning carpet weaving and this way, she could help her family solve their economic problems.
Nasiba, another worker, asked the government and people to buy carpets produced by them in order to support them.
Yasmin, a grade 11th student, said after her school was closed, she decided to start learning carpet weaving.
Balkh Commerce and Industry Department officials assured support to women industrialists and entrepreneurs.
Naseer Ahmed Niazi, deputy director of Balkh Commerce and Industry department, says the acting government supports businesswomen and industrialists and for this purpose, it has formed an association to solve women’s problems.
After the closure of girls’ high schools and universities, many girls have turned to learning professional skills.
