KABUL (Pajhwok): Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB) leadership during a meeting with the UN Special Coordinator Feridun Hadi Sinirlioglu have demanded the removal of financial sanctions imposed by the international community on Afghanistan, according to a statement on Tuesday.
After political change back in 2021, US frozen Afghanistan’s nearly $10 billion assets and imposed economic sanctions on banking sector in the country.
DAB Acting Head Hidayatullah Badri and other officials today (Tuesdy) held meeting with the visiting UN envoy Feridun Hadi Sinirlioglu, a statement from DAB said.
Badri said that Afghanistan wanted improved relationships with all financial institutions in line with the international laws and principles.
He asked Sinirlioglu to reflect upon realities and progress made in Afghanistan during the recent years.
Sediqullah Khalid, DAB Chief of Staff, said that considering the problems faced by the people of Afghanistan, the international community should remove sanctions imposed on the country’s financial and banking system.
He said Afghanistan’s assets were the right of its people, leaving them frozen was not in the interest of Afghanistan and hoped that the international community will take positive steps in this regard.
Earlier, US announced that $3.5 billion of Afghanistan’s fund would be transferred to Afghan Fund, a new monetary fund created in Switzerland and the right to spend these money would be a responsible board.
Anwarulhaq Ahadi, member of this board, in March said that Afghanistan’s $3.5 million generated $155 million profit in less than one year time.
