PARAKH (Pajhwok): As part of 13th bidding process, 2,867 Carats of emeralds extracted from the natural reservoirs in Panjsher province had been sold against $296,750, an official said on Wednesday.
Mohammad Qasim Ameer, head of the Mining and Petroleum Department, said 80 businessmen from Panjsher, Kabul, Kapesa, Uruzgan, Nangarhar, Nuristan and Parwan provinces participated in the 13th bidding processing of emeralds.
He said these emeralds excavated from 10 natural sites in the Hisa-i-Awal district of Panjsher.
Emeralds excavation was banned for two years but recently the government lifted the ban and started its excavation and sell.
According to the Mining Department in the 12th bidding process emeralds worth nearly three million dollars were sold.
The total numbers of registered emerald mines were 1,250 in Panjsher in which excavation work on 350 mines was underway and over 7,000 people are employed in these mines.
