MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Some residents of Maimana City, the capital of northwestern Faryab province, have expressed their concerns over the presence of petrol stations in residential areas and demanded government to remove them.

Last Friday, a fire erupted in one of the petrol stations in Maimana City which left one child injured and inflicted losses to public property and houses in the area.

Feroz Ishaqzai, the resident of locality and an eyewitness, said after few minute of the fire erupted the fire brigade had arrived in the area and the large bas reservoirs started to explode.

The situation left local residents worried who left their homes and as a result one small girl was injured.

“We with our own eyes saw how much the presence of petrol station in the residential area was dangerous and have consequences,” he said.

Two local residents who suffered huge losses to their homes asked the government to pay off their losses and asked the government to stop all petrol stations in residential areas from functioning.

Syed Tajuddin, a community leaders of Kart-i-Sulha in 9th Municipality District, said that petrol stations should not exist closed to the residential areas.

He said: “As a result of explosions that took place, the glass of the houses broken, people were rushing, the women and children were afraid, if the fire was not quickly controlled, it could spread to the city and city and it would have been a huge catastrophe.”

He also asked the government leadership take step for the transfer of petrol stations from inside the city to outside and stop issuance license to petrol stations inside the city.

Dur Mohammad, member of the fire brigade team, said that personnel of the fire brigade reached the site of incident on time and controlled the fire.

The reason for the fire and explosions in the oil tank was carelessness of the owner of the petrol station during pouring petrol into a car.

Owner of the petrol station said that he suffered $600,000 financial loss in the fire incident and he was happy that fire did not leak to the oil storages and there was no casualty.

Mawlavi Jamal Nasir Dindost, General Director of Petrol and Gas Authority in Faryab, while referring to public concerns over the presence of petrol stations in the residential areas said that taking decision against the operation of petrol stations may result in a strong response.

He added that recently he received the strategy regarding petrol stations from the center and shares it with the leadership of the province and they will take the necessary measures according to the procedure and decision of the leadership of the province

Mufti Esmatullah Muradi, the governor’s spokesperson, said that government gave priority to public demand and necessary decisions regarding petrol stations operational in the residential areas would be taken.
