KABUL (Pajhwok): The Chinese special envoy has called on the US to take responsibility for Afghanistan’s reconstruction, unfreeze its assets and lift unilateral sanctions.
Yue Xiaoyong wrote on his X page China emphasised on harder work with the UN and regional partners, especially Afghanistan’s neighbours, to enhance engagement with Kabul.
He argued interaction with the current Afghan government was necessary for the country’s peace, stability, reconstruction and prosperity.
Yue Xiaoyong described the recent Doha conference as a failed meeting because no dialogue was held with interim government officials.
He said: “The Doha meeting, as UN Secretary- General Antonio Guterres put it, covered the main areas of concern ensuring that “Afghanistan does not become a ‘hotbed’ of terrorist activity” and “that it has inclusive institutions”.
UNAMA head Roza Otunbayeva, during a meeting with Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, hoped the proposed appointment of a special UN envoy for Afghanistan would not affect work with the caretaker government.
For its part, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan says the imposition of sanctions is not in the interest of any side.
The caretaker government has repeatedly said the use of Afghanistan’s territory would not be allowed against any country.
