Khost farms produce 650 tons of honey last year

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Agriculture Irrigation and Livestock Department in southeastern Khost province says about 650 tons of honey was obtained from 430 bee farms last year, but expects a decrease in the honey harvest this year.

Meanwhile, owners of bee farms say they are facing many problems.

Kamran, a bee farm owner, told Pajhwok Afghan News relevant departments were yet to provide them with beekeeping training.

He said: “No one cooperates with us in Khost. We buy needed equipment from Pakistan. Honey products have good market in Pakistan.”

Khairullah, another farm owner, demanded proper market for their honey product.

He said the quality of the local honey was higher and if suitable market was found, its production level would also increase.

Officials of the Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Department also acknowledge the problems of beekeepers.

Inamullah Javed, director of the department, told Pajhwok they had provided possible facilities to beekeepers in cooperation with partner organizations.

He added: "Various institutions have provided trainings to beekeeping farm owners. “

About 650 tons of honey was obtained from 430 farms last year, but this year the honey production level might be lower, he explained.

He linked the decrease in production with heavy seasonal rains in which many trees flowers destroyed.
