KABUL (Pajhwok): A group of United Nations (UN) experts has asked all countries to recognise the Palestinian state in order to ensure peace in the Middle East, says a media report.
The UN professionals said recognition of the Palestinian state was crucial acknowledgement of the rights of the Palestinians and their struggle towards independence, according to Reuters.
The UN special rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Palestinian territories was also among the experts demanding Palestine’s recognition.
"This is a pre-condition for lasting peace in Palestine and the entire Middle East – beginning with the immediate declaration of a ceasefire in Gaza and no further military incursions into Rafah," they said.
The call came a week after Spain, Ireland and Norway officially recognised the Palestinian state.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Turkey, Qatar and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation have welcomed the move.
