KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Information and Culture (MoIC) says a delegation, led by the deputy minister, has traveled to western Ghor province to assess the condition of the historic Jam Minaret.

Khubaib Ghofran, a spokesperson for MoIC, shared on X that Maulvi Atiqullah Azizi, the deputy minister, is heading the delegation which includes Eng. Haseeb Nasim, responsible for the preservation and restoration of historical monuments, as well as a team of technical engineers.

The delegation will evaluate the condition of the Jam Minaret and other historical and cultural sites in the province.

Earlier this year, Ghor Information and Culture Department reported that recent floods had caused significant damage to the Jam Minaret, raising concerns about its preservation.

The Jam Minaret, located in the Shahrak-i-Ghor district amidst the towering valleys of the Jam region, is the second-largest brick minaret in the world after the Qutb Minaret in New Delhi.

It stands 63 meters tall and was constructed by Sultan Ghiasuddin Ghori during the Ghorian Empire.

In 2002, the Jam Minaret was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, and on December 10, 2020, it was also listed in the Islamic World Cultural Heritage List.
