Russia, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan to sign deal on new transport corridor

KABUL (Pajhwok): A trilateral agreement to establish a new transport corridor between Russia (Tatarstan), Turkmenistan and Afghanistan is expected to be signed at the 2026 Kazan Forum.

The route is being considered as an alternative to the “North–South” transport corridor, with the aim of facilitating regional trade.

Russian media, citing the country’s business center for Afghanistan, reported that the proposed route is intended to bypass the North–South corridor, which has faced disruptions due to tensions and military conflicts in Iran.

Rustam Khabibullin said the proposal for the project was put forward by Afghanistan’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, adding that the first commercial shipments are expected to be dispatched from the Tatarstan region via the new route.

According to reports, the corridor could be of particular importance to Russian exporters, as well as to European and Asian companies seeking secure and reliable transport routes.
