KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 164 people have been killed and more than 900 others injured in powerful earthquakes in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, reports said on Thursday.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said on Thursday morning that following the strong earthquakes in Venezuela, there is a high likelihood of heavy casualties and widespread damage, with initial estimates suggesting the death toll could range between 10,000 and 100,000.

The USGS stated that “heavy casualties and extensive damage are likely, and this disaster is expected to be widespread.”

Meanwhile, CNN recently reported that at least 164 people have been killed as a result of the two earthquakes.

The report added that more than 900 others were injured in the incidents.

It further stated that, given the number of collapsed and damaged buildings, the total casualty figures are likely to rise significantly.

Meanwhile, the United States has said it is in contact with Venezuelan authorities following the powerful earthquakes and is sending rescue teams to assist victims.

According to Reuters, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau wrote on the social media platform X that the United States, in coordination with Venezuela’s interim government, will deploy search-and-rescue teams, medical supplies, humanitarian aid and other essential resources in the early days following the disaster.
