KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 20 students have been killed after a wooden boat carrying them home from state examinations capsized in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, local authorities said.
According to the Associated Press, the incident occurred on Friday when the overcrowded boat sank near the confluence of the Sankuru and Kasai rivers in Kasai Province.
Francois Kabulo, administrator of the Ilebo area, said 80 passengers had been rescued, while the bodies of 20 victims had so far been recovered.
However, an eyewitness, Tshikudi Jean, said the boat was carrying more than 200 people, raising fears that the death toll could rise further as search and recovery efforts continue.
