KABUL (Pajhwok): Heavy rains and strong winds have killed at least three people and displaced hundreds across central and southern Chile, Al Jazeera reported.

President José Antonio Kast on Friday travelled to the worst-hit Biobío region to assess the damage and government response.

Chile’s disaster agency, SENAPRED, said 466 people were staying in shelters, while 158 others, mostly in the Coquimbo region, were isolated due to rising water levels. Seven people were injured.

Authorities ordered evacuations in the Campamento Ribera del Rio area near Talagante following a rise in river levels.

The floods disrupted daily life, with some schools suspended and mining company Codelco halting operations at the Andina mine due to storms. About 257,000 people, mainly in the south, remain without electricity.

The victims included a worker killed while clearing a road in Negrete, a person who fell while cleaning a roof in Temuco, and another who died from electrocution in Santiago.

Chile’s meteorological authorities have warned that further heavy rainfall is expected in central areas of the country.
