KABUL (Pajhwok): The United States says it has targeted Iran’s military command centres, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites and air defence systems in its latest strikes.
Meanwhile, the Iranian army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) say they have attacked US military bases in Kuwait and Jordan in response.
In a statement, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it carried out a fresh wave of strikes on Iran at 9:00am Eastern Time on Tuesday.
It said US forces targeted Iran’s military command centres, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites and air defence systems in an effort to reduce the country’s ability to attack commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
The command claimed commercial shipping continued to pass through the strategic international waterway.
The statement said: “Since the beginning of May, US forces have facilitated the transit of around 900 commercial vessels carrying 450 million barrels of crude oil.”
Meanwhile, the IRGC said in a statement that, during the second phase of the 24th wave of Operation Nasr 2, it had launched missile and drone strikes overnight on a long-range US radar base, a communications and satellite reception centre and a US missile defence radar site in Kuwait, destroying the facilities.
According to the statement, a maintenance compound for MQ-9 drones at Ali Al Salem Air Base was also struck, with several drones destroyed or severely damaged.
The Iranian army’s public relations office also said that, in response to the US attacks and during the 19th phase of Operation Sa’eqeh, its one-way attack drones targeted administrative buildings and direction-finding antennas at Camp Arifjan, a helicopter parking area at Camp Al Udairi, and accommodation buildings used by US forces at Ahmad Al Jaber Air Base in Kuwait.
The Iranian army added that the US attacks had destabilised security in the region and that its operations were aimed at restoring peace and stability.
