KABUL (Pajhwok): Five Thai paramilitary soldiers have been killed and six civilians wounded after armed attackers targeted a security checkpoint in the country’s insurgency-hit south, the army said.
The attack took place on Wednesday evening at the Buketa Sami checkpoint in Narathiwat province, where assailants used gunfire and pipe bombs against members of Task Force Ranger Regiment 45, Al Jazeera reported.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and authorities have not reported any arrests.
The army paid tribute to the slain soldiers, saying their service and sacrifice would be remembered and honoured.
The assault was among the deadliest attacks on Thai security forces in recent years and came a day after a car bomb exploded outside a former police station in Narathiwat, injuring an officer and damaging the building.
