KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has said Afghanistan’s stability and security are strategically important for all regional countries, adding that Tehran supports efforts to establish a secure and terrorism-free Afghanistan.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, Araghchi made the remarks on Friday at a meeting of foreign ministers from member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan.
He described Afghanistan as one of the most important shared security and development issues for the organization, saying stability in the country was significant not only for Afghans but also for neighboring and regional states.
Araghchi said addressing terrorism, extremism, transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, illegal migration, and humanitarian challenges requires close, coordinated, and sustained cooperation among regional countries through multilateral mechanisms, particularly the SCO.
Referring to Iran’s historical, cultural, and civilizational ties with Afghanistan, the Iranian foreign minister said Tehran, while respecting national sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and shared regional responsibility, supports initiatives that lead to a secure, stable, developed, and terrorism-free Afghanistan with an inclusive government.
Araghchi also called for an end to tensions and conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
