Mullah Abdul Wakeel, killed in the Shalez area on the outskirts of the provincial capital, led a group of insurgents, provincial spy chief, Syed Amir Shah Sadat, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Wakeel had 20 gunmen who were involved in roadside bombings and other attacks on Afghan government officials, he said, without giving the exact date of the rebel commander’s killing.
Another official said on condition of anonymity foreign troops had arrested the commander before handing him over to Afghan forces. The commander was killed when he tried to snatch a gun from a security official while he was being taken to a detention centre.
