PUL-I-ALAM (PAN): The Baraki Barak district police chief was killed along with his two guards during an insurgent attack in the central province of Logar, officials said on Saturday.
The police chief Col. Hazrat Mohammad and his two guards were killed on Friday evening when Taliban ambushed them in the Rajan area of the Baraki Barak district, deputy police chief Col. Rayes Khan Sadiq told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The incident occurred after Taliban stormed a police checkpoint in the district and Mohammad, was attacked when he was traveling to the area to support other policemen, he said.
One policeman was also wounded in the attack, said Sadiq, adding that several Taliban attackers were also killed in the gun battle.
Mohammad had been working for the past five years as the district’s police chief and had faced many militant assaults but escaped unhurt.
Several Taliban fighters were also killed during the one-hour clash with police, said Governor Din Mohammad Darwish.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed they killed many policemen including the district police chief.
