5 Zabul policemen defect to Taliban

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Five policemen have defected to the insurgents in southern Zabul province, an official said on Monday.

The policemen joined the Taliban ranks in the Spina Ghbarga area on the periphery of Qalat, the provincial capital, late on Sunday.

Zabul police chief, Brig. Gen. Rogh Lewanay, told Pajhwok Afghan News the defectors also surrendered a pick-up, two heavy machine guns and several other weapons to the fighters.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid acknowledged the policemen’s surrender. He said three of them were militants who had joined the police force.
