HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Three senior officials were kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in the Pashtun Zarghoon district of western Herat province on Wednesday evening.
However, one of the captives was freed shortly after being seized by the gunmen, the acting governor told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Asiluddin Jame said the kidnapped trio included the district’s administrative chief, human rights head and a primary court judge.
“They were kidnapped on their way to the provincial capital,” the acting governor said, adding tribal elders were trying to secure the release of the two officials still in captivity.
Jame said the officials were travelling to Herat City without informing the security forces. So far no group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.
