TALUQAN (Pajhwok): An appellant court on Wednesday sentenced a 22-year-old man to death for rapping his seven-year-old sister in northern Takhar province.
The convict, Mirwais, had confessed to sexually assaulting her sister, Saleha, said the judge, adding that his punishment was to be hanged till death.
The incident took place one month ago in Paroza-i-Sharqi locality of Taluqan, the provincial capital.
Women’s Affairs Director Razm Ara Hawash praised the verdict from the Court of Appeals in the case. She said the capital punishment would help discourage violence against women.
Mawluda Akbari, a women’s rights activist, said the court decision was a positive move and would help in protection of women’s rights. She hoped others men involved in violating women’s rights would get the same treatment.
Saliha’s family refused to talk to media, but Mirwais was unhappy with the court’s decision.
He said he had psychological problems and could not understand how to defend himself. He insisted he had not committed the crime for which he was accused and sentenced to death.
