SAR-I-PUL CITY(PAN fighters ambushed his vehicle traveling in a convoy in northern Sar-i-Pul province, officials said on Saturday.
Col. Mohammad Daud, the Gosfandi police chief, was killed on Friday on his way to Borqoot area, where a clash between police, backed by area people, and the Taliban had taken place, police chief, Brig. Gen. Asadullah Sherzad, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The attack on the police chief convoy sparked a fierce gun-battle between police and militants, he said. One of the attackers was killed and six others injured in the clash.
Daud was appointed as Gosfandi police chief 10 days ago, a judicial officer, Mohamamd Musa, said.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility for the attack. He said two commanders were among six policemen killed in the ambush.
The assassination of a police officer by the Taliban takes place for the first time in Sar-i-Pul.
