KABUL Food Programme said on Tuesday it had launched a project to assist 1,500 deserving families in eastern Nangarhar province.
The families were issued cards that would enable them to receive food from specific shops on a monthly basis, the UN agency said in a statement.
The statement quoted Asadullah Azhari, a WFP spokesman, as saying that the one-year project would cost $2.7 million (124 million afghanis) provided by Holland.
Azhari said efforts were being made to extend the programme with the support of donors.
The WFP intends to launch similar programmes in Kabul, Balkh, Herat and Badakhshan provinces.
