GHAZNI CITY (PAN-Kandahar highway remained close for a sixth day on Thursday due to the collapse of a bridge in southern Ghazni province, an official said on Thursday.
Thousands of trucks remained stuck on both sides of the bridge, Gilan police chief, Staff Captain. Gul Ahmad told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Work on a new subway near the collapsed bridge has been launched, said the Gilan district chief, Mahboobullah Sabawoon. Lorries carrying more than 60 tonnes of loads had caused the problem, he added.
Saeedullah, a resident of Gilan, said a subway had already been constructed for small vehicles.
Asadullah, a trucker, said that more than 4,000 cargo trucks had been stuck and the drivers were faced with serious problems.
Director of Public Works Mohammad Qurban said his department did not have enough resources to build another bridge. However, the department is trying to repair the damage.
