KUNDUZ CITY (PAN) operation in northern Kunduz province, an official said on Sunday.

The predawn raid was conducted in the Katakhel area on the outskirts of Kunduz City, the provincial capital, a gubernatorial spokesman told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Mahboobullah Saeedi quoted the NATO-led force as claiming to have detained an insurgent leader. The spokesman was unclear whether or not the detainee had links to the Taliban.

But resident Dad Gul identified the commander as Mumtaz, who was staying along with three of his armed associates at the residence of a schoolteacher, Awal Din.

“At 2.00am, a helicopter of foreign forces landed near the teacher’s house. In the morning, I learnt that the commander has been arrested along with three of his supporters,” he said.

Meanwhile, the alliance confirmed the operation and said one of the detainees was suspected of leading a cell of 20 Taliban fighters and facilitating the shipment of IEDs throughout Kunduz.
