MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): Unidentified gunmen shot dead an elder of the Kochi tribe in the northern province of Balkh, officials said on Tuesday.
Mohammad Azim Khan, 60, was gunned down by motorcyclists in the Khwaja Boran area of Kholam district late on Monday, the district chief, Mohammad Ibrahim, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
His teenaged son and a passerby were also killed in the attack, he said. Police had launched an investigation into the incident, the district chief added.
They had no enmity with anyone, said Mohammad Ibrahim, a brother of the victim. “I can surly say that the Taliban aren’t behind my brother’s murder.”
He might have been killed due to local disputes, believed Kochi Affairs Director Mohammad Farooq. More than 30 tribal elders have been killed over the past two years in Balkh province.
