Top Taliban commander detained in Baghlan

PUL-I-KHUMRI (PAN-led soldiers in the northern province of Baghlan, the alliance said on Tuesday.

The commander, detained in Dahna-i-Ghori district late on Monday night, was involved in bringing insurgents from Pakistan) said in a statement.  Soldiers and civilians suffered no casualties.

District police chief, Maj. Noor Gul, confirmed the arrest to Pajhwok Afghan News and identified the commander as Mohammad Qul, a former member of Hezb-i-Islami (HIA).

The detainee was taken to a base of foreign soldiers in the province, he said. “Afghan and foreign troops arrested Qul at about 1:00am,” said Azizullah, a neighbour of the militant commander.

Since the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989, Qul had been running a private business and had no links to any rebel group, he added.
