MEHTARLAM (PAN and a child, were killed and nine others wounded in a traffic accident during a wedding procession in eastern Laghman province, officials said on Friday.
The incident happened on the Kabul-Sarobi highway on Thursday afternoon, the highway security commander, Safa Gul, told Pajhwok Afghan News. The dead included two women, a male and a child from the same family and a second woman from another family, Gul said, adding nine others were wounded in the accident, which he blamed on reckless driving.
The wedding procession was on the way to Laghman from Kabul when the car, the victims were travelling in, collided with a Mercedes vehicle, Allaudin, who brought his injured child to the Laghman civil hospital, said.
Dr. Abdullah, the surgical ward in-charge, confirmed receiving five dead bodies and nine injured people at the hospital. The bodies were released to their relatives, he said. Seriously injured were referred to a hospital in neighbouring Nangarhar province, the doctor said.
Witnesses said the wedding car was driving at high speed and not obeying the rules of the road.
