JALALABAD (PAN): Hundreds of tribal elders, hailing from 22 districts of eastern Nangarhar province, on Sunday voiced their support to the Afghan government-initiated peace parleys with the rebels.
Titled as “Role of elders in brining peace,” a gathering in this connection was organised under the aegis of Afghanistan in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital.
“The assembly was aimed at sharing options by elders with the council officials regarding peace talks the opposition,” provincial chief of tribal and border affairs, Mohammad Ayub Sharafat, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said that tribes living on both sides of the Durand Line could play a key role in brining peace to Afghanistan.
The acting tribal and border affairs minister, Mohammad Yaqub Ahmadzai, urged tribal elders to invite the rebels to the negotiation table in their respective areas.
He claimed the process was moving forward in the right direction. However, he said the restoration of peace was not possible without support of tribal elders.
Deputy Nangarhar governor, Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal, said the war was only confined to Pakhtun-dominated areas. He claimed residents of the eastern province wanted peace talks with all opposition groups.
