Another surrendering Taliban leader killed in Kunduz

KUNDUZCITY(PAN commander was killed by his former comrades in northern Kunduz province, an official said on Thursday.

The former Taliban commander, Gulistan, who joined the peace process along with his 10 fighters four months back, was shot dead in Abidi village of Dasht-i-Archi district on Wednesday night, the district chief, Sheikh Sadruddin, said.

One of his fighters, speaking on condition of anonymity, said their ex-colleagues killed Gulistan and had warned them of meeting the same fate.

So far as many as four Taliban commanders, who had the government-initiated peace process, have been killed in Kunduz over the past three months. 

The killed commanders include Maulvi Sahib district, officials say.

“The killings have worried the rest of fighters joining the peace plan. They need security from the government against their former friends,” provincial peace council chief, Asadullah Amarkhel said.

The Taliban assert responsibility for killing fighters switching sides. They have warned their men against joining the peace process.

Local officials say surrendering Taliban would be recruited into local police forces.
