TIRINKOT (PAN): An Afghan soldier shot and killed an Australian counterpart in the Chora district of central Uruzgan province on Monday, officials said.
The shootout took place after a brief verbal between the two, police chief Col. Fazl Ahmad Sherzad, told Pajhwok Afghan News. He did not provide further details.
A spokesman for the NATO) in Uruzgan, Lachlan Somon, confirmed the incident.
The governor’s spokesman, Milad Ahmad Mudassir, said the incident took place in Baloch area. The Australian later died of his wound in hospital, he said. An investigation had been opened, he added.
A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, claimed one of their fighters, Noorullah, shot dead eight foreign troops during an attack on a NATO base in Chora district. He said the attacker was able to flee.
Ahmadi’s claim was rejected by local officials as baseless.
