JALALABAD (PAN): Hundreds of kilograms of hashish were seized by security officials after an hour-long firefight with traffickers in eastern Nangarhar province on Tuesday, an official said.
Loaded on 12 mules, the 1000 kg of charas were packed in 30 sacks for smuggling to Pakistan. Police intercepted them in the Gorgorai area of Haska Mena district, the first border police zone commander, Brig. Gen. Aminullah Amarkhel, told a news conference in Jalalabad.
Police escaped unhurt the clash, but blood spots at the site indicated the traffickers had suffered casualties, the official said, adding the men wanted to smuggle the drugs to Pakistan for processing through the Spin Ghar area.
The commander said they had received prior reports that narcotics were being smuggled into the neighbouring country. Smugglers often succeeded in their attempts because border police lacked helicopters to chase them, he said.
