PUL-I-ALAM/ MAIMANA (PAN commander in the central province of Logar on Tuesday, police said.

Kaka, a former commander of the Ittihad Party, was gunned down in the Surkhabad area of Mohammad Agha district, the provincial police chief said.

Col. Ghulam Sakhi Rogh Lewanai told Pajhwok Afghan News Kaka had been mediating between Taliban and the government as part of the ongoing reconciliation campaign.

An investigation had been launched into his murder, said the Logar crime branch chief, Mohammad Jan Abid. No one has been arrested so far in connection with the killing.

“Commander Kaka had no enmity with anyone,” said Syed Rahman, a resident. Four motorcyclists opened fire at Kaka, killing him on the spot.

No one has so far claimed responsibility for the assassination, but such incidents are often blamed on the insurgents, who have vowed to target government supporters.

Elsewhere, suspected Taliban fighters killed a man in northern Faryab province on the charge of spying for the security personnel, said police chief, Maj. Gen. Syed Ahmad Sami.

The incident happened on Monday night in the Jangal area. “If a person cooperates with police, he will meet the same fate,” warned a letter found attached to the victim’s body.
