TIRINKOT (PAN): A five-year agricultural development plan with emphasis on addressing farmers’ concerns has been launched in Uruzgan province, officials said on Monday.

Traditional agricultural practices and a lack of proper irrigation system has been affecting the crop yield, said the agriculture director, Sardar Mohammad Alako. He told Pajhwok Afghan News the stragetic plan was aimed at having a market-oriented agricultural development.

The deteriorating road condition affected timely transportation of agricultural products to the market, he said, adding the five-year plan, launched in cooperation with the delegation of the ministry concerned, would help address all concerns of farmers.

In order to make the project a success, the agriculture ministry delegation met tribal elders, concerned officials and farmers’ representatives, said the delegation head, Ahmad Faridoon.

He hoped the $1.5 million (69,720,000 Afghanis) plan, funded by Australia, would result into resolving problems being faced by famers.

Farmers say a lack of proper irrigation system is the result of low agriculture production in the province.
