JALALABAD (PAN): The police chief of eastern Kunar province has called on President Karzai to let police respond with force to Pakistani attacks on the Afghan border, officials said on Tuesday.
Ten people were killed and two children injured last night when a Pakistani soldier attacked across the border into the Asmar district of Kunar province, and many families living there had to evacuate their homes, Brig. Gen. Ewaz Mohammad Naziri, the provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Naziri urged president Karzai and the Interior Minister to allow police to defend the territory by returning fire across the border.
Pakistani soldiers have been firing mortar shells across the border into Afghanistan and have targeted the Nari, Shegal, Dangam, and Surgano districts of the eastern Kunar province in nighttime attacks, said Brig. Gen. Aminullah Amarkhel, the eastern zone border police commander.
Amarkhel said he had video evidence of the mortar attacks and that each of the shells weighed 35 kilograms. He called on President Karzai to close the Pakistani consulate and embassy in Kabul.
He also urged the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to deploy soldiers into the tribal areas of the border to ward off attacks from insurgent bases there.
Amarkhel also threatened to attack Pakistani soldiers without authorization should any further attacks from Pakistan occur.
Meanwhile, the Afghan Foreign Ministry summoned the Pakistani ambassador in Kabul late Monday and condemned the attacks over the Afghan border.
