AIBAK (PAN Bank launched a project to bring electricity to underserved parts of Samangan province, officials said on Tuesday.
Currently, fewer than 10,000 residences, commercial buildings and government structures in the area receive electricity from neighboring Baghlan province. By the beginning of next year, a new substation will provide electricity for an additional 30,000 structures in Hazrat Sultan, Khuram and Salar districts, said Director of Energy and Water Abdul Latif.
The electrical sub-station will provide 16 megawatts of power imported from Uzbekistan.
The World Bank is funding the $7 million project, which will be implemented by the Indian company, IRCON International Ltd.
The project will be completed by January 2012, according to an official at IRCON, Shekh Rayesuddin.
Residents have been asking for electricity for a long time, said Mohammand Amin, a local resident. They are happy about the project and hope it will be completed soon, he said.
