Militants set free three kidnapped officials in Kunar

ASADABAD (PAN): Suspected militants on Tuesday released three kidnapped officials of a vocation training centre, after spending almost three weeks in captivity in eastern Kunar province, the governor said.

Unknown gunmen kidnapped six officials, including the head of a vocation training centre, in the Shegal district on their way to the district centre from Asadabad, the provincial capital, on June 11.

The abductors later released three of the captives, but held hostage the three others, including the centre’s head.

The three were released on Tuesday morning, Governor Syed Fazlullah Wahidi, told Pajhwok Afghan News. He linked the release to efforts by the provincial chapter of the High Peace Council and tribal elders.

The head of the vocation centre, Abdul Mukhtar, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they had been held captive by a Taliban commander named Nusrat.

“We were not tortured during the captivity, but we travelled miles on foot to reach home,” he said.

No one had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.
