GHAZNI CITY (PAN plans to publish picture books for school students about historic places and monuments in southern Ghazni province, an official said on Sunday.

The books are being published in consultation with UNESCO and the Ministry of Information and Culture, Dr. Lora Desko, head of the culture section at the US embassy, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The aim is to teach students about ancient places, monuments and other pieces of their cultural heritage, she said, adding that the books would be published in three languages — Dari, Pashto and English – and would be distributed to students of ages between 6 and 16.

Ghazni Information and Culture Director Hameedullah Sarwari said the books would help young people, especially students, understand their history.

The publishing process will be completed by the end of this year, and the books will first be distributed to students in Ghazni, and later to students in other provinces.

Abdul Majeed, a teacher at the Wakil Mohammad Jan School in Ghazni City, hoped the books would have enough information about historic places in Ghazni.

In 2013, Ghazni will serve as the Asian capital of Islamic civilization.
