WASHINGTON (PAN): US President Barack Obama telephoned his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai on Wednesday to express condolences on the death of his brother, Ahmed Wali Karzi.

“The President this morning placed a call and spoke briefly with President Karzai, and expressed his condolences on the loss of his half-brother,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters at his daily news conference.

The call lasted for a very short duration and this was the only topic.

Meanwhile, in a tele-video conference with Pentagon correspondents, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)  Deputy Chief of Staff for Stability, German Army Maj. Gen. Richard Rossmanith, said a day after the killing of Ahmed Wali Karzai that it is too early to make a comprehensive assessment.

“General (David) Petraeus has extended his deepest personal condolences to President Karzai on the death of his brother, who was killed in Kandahar yesterday,” Rossmanith said on Wednesday. He refused to discuss the consequences of the assassination while Karzai was being laid to rest.
