SAR-I-PUL (PAN): A jailbreak attempt by prisoners has been thwarted by security forces in northeastern Sar-i-Pul province, an official said on Wednesday.
Prisoners revolted last night and tried to escape, but Afghan police and soldiers frustrated the effort, Jail Superintendent Gen. Mohammad Afandi Rabati told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The mutiny was planned by some prisoners facing possible death sentence, Rabati said, adding the revolt was to be aided by other inmates. Nearly 50 inmates in the prison are on death row.
Three planner of the revolt were detained and are currently under investigation.
Resident Ghulam Hazrat said he had heard chants of Allah-o-Akbar and gunfire since 9pm. About 224 prisoners, including 20 women, are being held in the prison, located in a rented house.
